Castillo de San Marcos is one of the premier historical sites in St. Augustine Florida. It is the oldest masonry for in the continental United States. Located right on the banks of the Matanzas River, you can experience the rich history of Castillo de San Marcos Fort. It is within walking distance of Victorian House Bed & Breakfast.
The masonry of this fort is unique to the time period. It was completed in 1695 after 23 years of construction making it over 300 years old (older than the United States of America). The fort is now a national monument and is under the jurisdiction of the National Parks Service.
You can take a self-guided tour of this historic fort. It is designed to be custom to the individual taking the tour. There is an app that you can download to take this tour and learn more about the fort as you go through it. This is a great activity for the whole family and you can even explore the Junior Ranger Program as this is part of the National Parks.
On weekends, you can view Historic Weapon Demonstrations. See the type of weapons that were used in this fort when it first opened. Musket and cannon firings generally take place on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays but check with the staff beforehand as these demonstrations are subject to change.
Entrance fees are as follows: -Adults (16 and older) $15.00 -Children (15 and younger) Free but must be with an adult
These entrance fees are good for 7 consecutive days so if you don't see everything that you want to, you can continue to come back within the week.
