History Of St. Augustine

St. Augustine was started in 1565. It’s the oldest place in the United States, where people from Europe and Africa have always lived. This happened 42 years before Jamestown and 55 years before Plymouth Rock. Spanish people made St. Augustine, and it was the first place in the USA where people stayed for a long time.

Architecture

The old buildings in St. Augustine show its history, but most of them are not as old as you might think. Many of the first buildings didn’t last because of St. Augustine’s troubled past. Only the Castillo de San Marcos, built in the late 1600s, survived when the British attacked in 1702.

You can still see parts of the original Spanish town from 1565 to 1764. Governor Gonzalo Méndez de Canzo planned the layout of the town, and you can still see narrow streets and houses with balconies like those the Spanish settlers built. In St. Augustine today, there are 36 buildings from colonial times and 40 more that are rebuilt to look like the old ones.

St. Augustine is special because it’s the only city in the United States where the streets and buildings still look Spanish.

Discovery of Florida

Historians say Juan Ponce de Leon, who was the first governor of Puerto Rico, founded Florida in 1513. He was looking for a place called Bimini and saw Florida’s east coast on Easter Sunday, which was March 27 that year. Ponce de Leon said Florida belonged to Spain and named it after the Easter season, which in Spanish is called Pascua Florida. This new land stretched north and west, covering a lot of the land in North America that Spain had yet to claim in places like Mexico and the Southwest.

Settlement

In the next fifty years, Spain tried six times to settle in Florida, but each attempt failed. Then, in 1564, French Protestants called Huguenots managed to build a fort and a colony near where Jacksonville is now, by the St. Johns River. This was a problem for Spain because their ships traveled along the east coast of Florida, carrying treasures from Central and South America to Spain. When Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés was getting ready to go to Florida with a fleet, Spain found out about the French settlement on land that belonged to Spain. King Philip II told Menéndez, who was Spain’s best admiral, to get rid of the French threat to Spain’s interests.
